Next room for me is the hotel function room, where the wedding ceremonies take place. This room will have a conservatory to the left on a purpose built extension, that’s why the French doors look like they lead to nowhere, they will lead directly outside. They are my clients lights, the rest my own stock, this is how I put the room together from planning to wiring, to finishing. Tips with each photo if they are any help.

The grand hallway in my current commission is taking a while to do. There is a lot of prep work painting and measuring before I can put things together. My client has some nice mouldings, Sue Cook cornice, RepliCast door pediments and a niche from the States. You can still see it’s a work in progress, but it’s coming along. I couldn’t help trying some bits out to see how it would look.

When I work on a house I use as much of the clients own things as possible. Most of us have a ‘stash’ of goodies we have kept for ages waiting for that just right project. In this one I have used my clients lights and most of her wallpapers. This room took ages as the original paint (magnolia) just looked terrible next to her wallpaper, it’s a Tudor themed hotel suite, I had to repaint everything a new darker shade. Here is today’s work with notes on what I did and how. What do you think of the colour change?

Work progressing on a rather complicated hotel room. This room has both an ensuite shower room and also a passage leading from the hall which will lead to other rooms and floors. you can see how I did the work to give the impression of both and how I feed wires through walls. I use blocks of MDF as spacers to make sure the new wall sits in position top and bottom.

I havent quite finished the red reception room yet (trouble with a ceiling light) so next week, but have made good progress on the dining room. It’s still very basic, and I haven’t put the final coat on the door (Ivory) but you can get the idea of colours which are my client choice (I think they are lovely). You can see how I do the mitre around the chimney breast to get it right.
