I work on my commissions during the day, but on a Sunday night I try and make time to work on my own house. It’s been a year and I have hardly touched it. Billiard room in progress..
Completed the house today, lots of lead work on the roof. I could keep adding things, but I have to stop sometimes and remember it’s not actually mine. I will age it slightly tomorrow with some watermarks and moss.
I feel like I have been working on this forever. Went to the York fair this weekend which allowed me to add some extra little details. Just the dormers to do now so I can complete the roof.
Today’s update on the Victorian house I’m working on. I have leaded the door with real lead and used some glass paint to match the colour my client chose for the front door. I’m going to put her house number in gold above the door in the glass. I changed the key stones above the windows too. Just the roof to do with real slate and windows..
I’m so far behind on my commissions at the moment I’m working weekends to try and catch up, today I started on the porch and finished the lead work on the flat roof.
I have never had an adult client who wants a house to look like a ‘dolls house’ most, like me, want a realistic miniature house, after all, we don’t want a toy.. even if we do want to play with it!! Researching Victorian houses they are a mix of ornate stonework and fancy brickwork, so I have started to adapt this kit to make it as realistic as I can. Work in progress as usual..
Update on going brick bonkers.. I have finally finished the brick work. Now for something creative, I have sanded the bricks as they are very uniform in shape to make the edges softer, rounded the corners on the windows, added some colour detailing and re sanded to tone it down. You can see the stages here. I will grout and add more details when finished.
This is what I’m up to at the moment, it’s a Victorian house from the Dolls House Cottage Workshop. It’s custom made with two bay windows. I have to individually brick the sections, I have made a start. I deliberately don’t want them to look too uniform and sterile and I will age and colour them (that’s if I don’t go mad first)
